My name is Bartosz Zalewski. I am Polish, living in Gdansk and studying at the Gdansk University of Technology. My fascination with new art and the architecture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries has developed owing to the city of Krakow. In 1900, i.e. during the Młoda Polska period (the Young Poland movement), Krakow was under Austrian rule, yet it was the centre of a revival of Polish art.
A few years ago, I was invited to Krakow by one of my friends who is an architect. During one of our city tours, he drew my attention to the building of the Zwiazkowa Printing House in Mikołajska Street, particularly to its cornice which is decorated with graduated leaves and tree fruit of a chestnut tree. In fact, a chestnut tree is the symbol of Krakow as well as the Young Poland movement. Since the Art Nouveau is very rare and uncommon in my area, it was the first time I gave it my close attention.
I am particularly keen on the changes in art and the architecture around the year 1900 due to the extreme diversity of motifs and forms in those days. The diversity is visible not only among the art centers, but also among the architects who used to work within one city. There are numerous such places in Europe. At that time, Poland was divided by three partitioners, as a result, art and architecture was under the influence of Austrians, Germans and Russians. Apart from the visual values, I am also interested in the theory and its contemporary analysis.
I began to travel intensively, mainly throughout Poland, searching for forgotten buildings and interiors. To be frank, I am petrified of the recent modernizations of facades in this country. An irretrievably damaged detail used to be in the centre of artistic activities during the period of the Partitions. I have been interested in photography for a long time, as a result, I have had no choice, but to create a photo archive of the movement and style in question. This website is the effect of my trips.

Nazywam się Bartosz Zalewski, pochodzę z Polski, studiuję na Politechnice Gdańskiej. Moja fascynacja nową sztuką i architekturą przełomu XIX i XX wieku zaczęła się w Krakowie. W 1900 roku, w okresie tzw. Młodej Polski, Kraków był miastem w zaborze austriackim, pełnił funkcje głównego ośrodka odrodzenia polskiej sztuki.
Kilka lat temu zostałem zaproszony do Krakowa przez kolegę architekta. Na jednej z wycieczek po starym mieście zwrócił mi uwagę na budynek Drukarni Związkowej przy Mikołajskiej 13, którego gzyms dekorują przeskalowane liście i owoce kasztanowca. Kasztanowiec jest symbolem Krakowa, symbolem Młodej Polski. Wtedy to pierwszy raz zwróciłem uwagę na secesję, która w moim miejscu zamieszkania ma praktycznie niedostrzegalne oblicze.
Skrajna różnorodność motywów i form jest powodem mojego zainteresowania przemianami w sztuce i architekturze jakie działy się około roku 1900. Różnorodność która występuje zarówno między ośrodkami sztuki, ale również wśród architektów w tym samym mieście. Takich miejsc na mapie Europy jest bardzo wiele. Na terenie ówczesnej polski, która była podzielona przez trzech okupantów, można spotkać wpływy austriackie, niemieckie oraz rosyjskie. Oprócz wartości wizualnych, interesują mnie również założenia teoretyczne i związana z nimi współczesna analiza.
Zacząłem intensywnie podróżować, głównie po Polsce, w poszukiwaniu zapomnianych obiektów i wnętrz. Przyznam, że ogarnia mnie lęk wywołany ostatnim trendem na modernizacje fasad. Detal, a na nim głównie skupiają się nowe wpływy sztuki w obrębie zaborów, podczas takich działań często jest bezpowrotnie niszczony. Od dawna interesuje się fotografią, w tych okolicznościach sprawą pierwszorzędną stała się archiwizacja na zdjęciach przejawów tego stylu. Efektem moich podróży jest niniejsza strona.
